Snow Blower Size Calculator

Quick answer: Enter your driveway area, typical snowfall per storm and surface. Small paved areas with light snow usually suit a single-stage electric or battery blower about 18 to 22 inches wide; larger areas, gravel, or regular storms over 8 to 12 inches point to a two-stage machine around 24 to 30 inches. Results are estimates.

How the estimate works

The tool applies simple rules of thumb. It compares your area and snowfall with thresholds commonly used to separate single-stage from two-stage machines, and treats gravel as needing a two-stage blower because single-stage augers touch the ground and can throw stones. Clearing time divides the area by the swath (width × forward pace) and adds a slowdown factor for deep snow. Real clearing time also depends on snow density, overlap, turns and the end-of-driveway plow ridge.

Illustrative examples (2026-10-29), not quotes or guarantees.

A 20 × 40 ft paved drive (800 ft²) with 8 in storms returns a single-stage or small two-stage class around 22 in wide, and roughly 5 minutes of pushing at 1.5 ft/s, before overlap and the plow ridge.

FAQ

Single or two-stage for 12 in storms?

Two-stage is the usual choice. See single vs two-stage.

Does slope matter?

Yes; self-propelled two-stage machines handle slopes more easily.

Is the time exact?

No. It ignores overlap, turns and heavy, wet snow.
